‘The role of the Osteopath is to find Health…anyone can find Disease’ – A.T. Still, Founder of Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a unique form of manual medicine that has been in practice for nearly 150 years! It was developed by American physician Dr Andrew Taylor Still who recognised the body has an innate ability to heal itself. He developed a unique set of biomechanical principles to treat musculoskeletal complaints and other functional disorders of the body upon which rational Osteopathic treatment is based.
- The body is a single unit of mind, body and spirit
- Structure and function are inter-related
- The body is capable of healing and regulating itself
Osteopathy uses a large range of techniques from quite firm ones such as manipulation, stretching and massage to more gentle ones such as myofascial release, cranio-sacral technique and a lot more in between! This means it can be adapted and suited to each person’s needs and no two treatments are alike. Everyone is treated individually based on their unique medical history, occupation and lifestyle factors and any other information specific to that individual.
